Mon Laferte Austin Concert reviews
Clapton-Great guitarist, not so great performer
"I had never seen Mon Laferte before and was eagerly anticipating the show. As expected, Mon Laferte is an exceptional guitarist, requiring minimal support. His band, comprised of a tight bass player, drummer, 2 keyboardists, and 2 singers to assist with Mon Laferte's weak voice, was very impressive. Mon Laferte's blues numbers, where he delved into his own guitar world, were particularly enjoyable. His rendition of some of his "hits" like "Cocaine" (mediocre) or "I Shot the Sherriff" (just plain stupid) were done in a perfunctory manner. There was something amiss about his performance. I don't know if he's painfully shy or indifferent, but he showed no interaction with the adoring audience. Apart from a few "thank yous," he did not acknowledge his band, opening act, songs, location, or anything else. It was unclear if he even knew or cared about the city he was performing in. The encore turned out to be the most disappointing part. He performed a decent version of "Crossroads" and then left. The audience clearly wanted more and deserved it. Additionally, the parking situation at Gwinnett Arena was a nightmare, making me hesitant to return. While entering the huge parking lot was efficient, leaving it was a major ordeal. We spent nearly an hour just trying to exit. I would prefer the surface lots of downtown, or Lakewood, or Chastain over Gwinnett any day."
